Early Detection Saves Lives

Oral cancer screening is a quick, painless examination performed during your dental visit to check for early signs of oral cancer and pre-cancerous changes.

What is oral cancer screening?

Screening involves a careful visual and physical examination of your mouth, lips, tongue, throat and neck.

01

Visual & Palpation Exam

Systematic inspection of oral tissues and neck nodes to detect abnormalities.

02

Risk Assessment

Evaluation of lifestyle and medical risk factors with personalised advice.

03

Monitoring of resolved lesions and guidance on prevention and self-checks.

Know The Warning Signs

Seek assessment for any unexplained mouth changes lasting more than two weeks.

  • Persistent ulcers or sores
  • Red or white patches (erythroplakia/leukoplakia)
  • Lumps, thickening or loose teeth
  • Numbness or difficulty swallowing
  • Unexplained bleeding or pain

Why is screening important?

  • Oral cancer is highly treatable when detected early.
  • Many early oral cancers cause no pain or obvious symptoms — regular screening is essential.
  • Screening can identify changes before they become serious.

Who should be screened?

Everyone should be screened regularly, but it is especially important if you:

  • Smoke or vape
  • Drink alcohol frequently
  • Chew betel nut or use smokeless tobacco
  • Have a history of oral cancer
  • Are over the age of 40

Prevention Tips

Stop tobacco use, reduce alcohol intake, protect against HPV, maintain a healthy diet and attend regular dental check-ups for screening.
